For the third year in a row, the La Crescenta “Zartonk” AYF Chapter held an open mic night, showcasing the artistic talents of local Armenian-American youth. The event, held on Fri., June 20 and titled “Speak Your Mind,” sought to serve as an avenue for youth to gather and express themselves among their peers.

“It’s a great way to bring the Armenian youth together,” said Sanan Shirinian, chairperson of the “Zartonk” chapter. “Expression through art is something that both AYF and non-AYF youth alike can relate to.”

Over 70 attendees turned out for the event, which featured musicians, dancers, comedians, poets, artists, and young filmmakers among its list of performers. The crowd was mostly made up of youth, with an equal mix of both AYF and non-AYF members.

Some of the highlights of the evening included a traditional Armenian dance ensemble, a comedic poke at Armenian family life, revolutionary song performances, and an aerosol art installation that read “Speak Your Meetk.” Music for the night was provided by “Zartonk” AYF member DJ Shah.

“As organizers, we felt that the event was a great success,” said Shirinian. “People from many different backgrounds were able to come together in a community center to laugh, cry, reflect, and learn through art.”

Even after the event ended, AYF members kept the party going by playing music and dancing during the cleanup.
